He’s Big and He Can Handle Our Questions
I travel a good bit and in the last two weeks, in particular, I have been on a lot of planes. Flying has a way of reminding me of how vulnerable and small I am in the grand scheme of life, and how big and powerful God is to have been able to speak our world into existence, as a blip within a larger cosmos.
There is something about rising into the heavens, up up up into the clouds, where my purview of busy commuters on trains, buses and highway systems below drift out of sight. While flying, I am always humbled by the panoramic view of endless sky.
It was actually on a plane in 2005 that God arrested my attention and I had what I would describe as my conversation experience. 2005 was a stressful time for me. I was trying to figure out some major life decisions, and navigating the social pressures of whether I would take the road less traveled or meander into the status quo.
I was wrestling with my faith big time and asking sincere questions of God: “if you are real, please reveal Yourself to me? Yes, I said ‘if’. I was no longer relying on songs that I heard in Sabbath school or youth choir, I was asking for myself as a man—God are you real?! Do you care? How do I hear you?
Cutting through my anxious mind as I flew through the friendly skies that day were passages I had recently read from the book ‘The Desire Of Ages’— new realizations that through Immanuel—Jesus, God was with us. The Father literally gave Jesus to the human family (use quote from D of A). In my headphones were the voices of gospel artists, Virtue, “miracle after miracle, I can’t count the times you undergirded me… Lord I thank you”
I reflected on the bigness of God as I observed the clouds and endless sky, juxtaposed with the reality that God was and is personally acquainted with me and loves me. “How could He know the number of hairs on our heads while also keeping the world on its axis in perfect rotation,” I wondered. How could God know my name? In the words of Israel Houghton, “Who am I that you are mindful of me, that you hear me when I call?”
Before I could stop them, tears leapt from my eyes uncontrollably. I put the Virtue song on repeat and with each rendition, I wept tears of surrender. In that moment, I gave my life to Christ and decided I wanted to be rebaptized. Although I grew up around the church, my conversion experience as an adult was different. It reflected a new understanding and acceptance of Christ’s love. My journey with Christ is ongoing as He continues to refine my character and reveal more of who He is to me.
30,000 feet in the air, God grabbed my attention. My question for you today is: Does God have your attention? Do you have questions you need to ask God? Perhaps you’ve experienced losses and pain in your life and you’re wondering where God was when you went through the experience. The good news is He’s big enough to handle our questions. Engage Him. Seek Him. Open God’s. Inquire of Him. He Will answer you.
